Jim highly recommends hiking to Yosemite Falls...and what to bring with you if you do it.

Transcript:

Hey, so, Jim, uh, tell me about this trip to Yosemite a few years back with your kids.

It was a great trip with my family. It’s a great memory. I was there with my son and my daughter about six years ago, and now they’re all grown up, of course, but we went to Yosemite. If you’ve never been to Yosemite, you wanna check this hike out. It’s Yosemite Falls and basically what you do is you hike from the bottom of the canyon up to about twenty-four hundred feet to the top. And it’s a pretty strenuous hike. And most…a lot of people go up about halfway to Columbia Rock and there they decide if they have enough energy to get to the top. And if they don’t, they turn around and go back. And this hike was done uh like I said six years ago and it was during a spring break trip when we were with a family of friends doing the same trip, and half of them, we got up to the halfway point, half were tired and they went back, but I continued up with my kids, and I had a great time, and also people we were going with, Masuko and her kids, they continued along with us too. And once we separated and we got up to a certain point, we realized that we were very low on water. Now this is April. So we…there’s still a lot of snowmelt so the fabulous thing was there was a local person in the creek and we asked, “Do you think it’s safe? Is there giardia, or anything like that?” If you don’t know what giardia is, it’s a microorganism that’s in the water, and if you get it inside your system, you can become very sick. And so we were a little bit worried about that, and this local person said, “Hey, it’s April. You know. There’s no sheep up a, above us. I think you’ll be fine. I’ve done it before. And so we just went for it. We, we filled up our water bottles, got plenty of water, got hydrated, and then we continued up to the top of the hike. And it was a great experience for my kids, something we’ll always remember. We took pictures. We got to the top. We were all tired, but we enjoyed a fantastic view of the valley. And it was just a wonderful experience that I had with my kids.

Nice.

And after spending you know a couple of uh you know maybe half hour at the top, then we went back down, started hiking back down to the bottom of the canyon.

Did you stop at that same place to get water again on the way down?

We, we of course went by. We didn’t get any more water. But it was uh you know definitely a fantastic trip. Very…Nice rocky trail. Great views. ummm, you know, not a lot of people during April obviously but I would highly recommend it. If you ever go to Yosemite.

What’s the temperature when, once you start getting up high? What’s the temperature…about?

Well, once you get up to the top you know it you know as the sun goes up, you, it warms up. You don’t have to worry about it being too cold, or anything like that.

Right on.

But it is a strenuous trip. But what I mean by that is when you start out hiking, and you get to the top, and you return to the canyon, it’s a good five six hours round trip, so you wanna make sure you take plenty of water and of course all the snacks that you need to give you energy to get to the top.

Right on.

It was a fantastic experience I would reco, highly recommend it for anyone going to Yosemite. Check it out. Yo. Yosemite Falls. It’s actually the highest falls in North America. And when you hike, when you do the whole thing all the way to the top, you end up hiking about six thousand feet. So it’s a, it’s a pretty good little jaunt. Highly recommend it.

Nice, man. I’ve gotta give it a go someday. Thanks.
